About New Bird City

Like all of America, in 2005 I saw the movie, March of the Penguins, and loved it.

My boyfriend (now husband) asked me, a longtime casual cartoonist, to draw him a comic about a penguin and a baby penguin. "Something's Fishy (or, a Very Important Penguin)" was this first strip. It didn't include a baby at all at first, but after a little nudging, I was persuaded and drew in the baby penguin watching the adult penguin fill in a survey.

And so the characters of Flop E. De Penguin (a.k.a. Floppy) and Baby De Penguin (a.k.a. BdP) were born. Since then, I have penned over 50 drawings of the penguin father and his baby penguin ward. It is worth noting that while Floppy is closely modeled after my husband, the character of BdP evolved into ressembling me, lest you draw any Freudian conclusions about the nature of our relationship.

To this end, I later went back and drew the story of how Floppy met Baby, in "Fast Friends."

No doubt about it, Baby's life is infinitely better for having met Floppy that day, and Baby, in turn, has brought a little extra joie de vivre into Floppy's life.
